Chapter 17 - Display Technologies Flashcards
What is a Pixel?
a picture element, with the colors red, blue, and green light.
Each element of a pixel is what?
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
CCFL stand for?
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp which was replaced by LEDs. CCFL screens need inverters.
LEDs stand for?
Light-emitting diodes
Nit measures what?
Nit is a measure of light.
what is OLED?
Organic LED instead of diodes OLED uses light-emitting lightbulbs. Most smart phones have OLED screens.
What is DLP?
Digital Light Processing. A grid of mirrors. Most common in projectors not really used on monitors.
Resolution is what?
Total number of pixels across and down.
What does GPU stand for?
Graphics Processing Unit, aka - video/graphics card. Today’s Video cards come with RAM.
Dominant Names for video cards
Nvidia and ATI/AMD are the dominant names. But Intel also makes video cards.
What is Integrated GPU?
Motherboard(s) are have built-in GPUs.
APU is what?
CPU + GPU = APU.
DVI-I is what?
Digital and Analog, and is usually white. again port for monitors. Has the plus sign ( + ) on the left.
DVI-D
Is Digital Only. Port for monitors. Has just the dash on the right ( - ).
DVI-I and DVI-D come in what?
Both single and dual link.
What does DRM stand for?
Digital Rights Management.
Riser Card
Allows you to plug in more video cards.
Projectors use what Technology?
DLP and LCD.
Projectors use what Technology?
DLP and LCD.
Lumens
Measurement of Brightness.
Projectors have geometric adjustments in what shapes?
Pincushion, Keystone, Skew
Overheat Shutdown
Video card is too hot. Bad video card fans, or video card not getting enough air flow/ventilation.
Dead Pixels
Bad monitor, get a new monitor
Artifacts
Video RAM. Get a new Video Card.
Incorrect Color Patterns
Check your cable, Video RAM.
DIM image
Issue on CCFL monitors, Replace CCFLs. Or turn the brightness up.
Flickering Image
Check your cables.
Distorted Image
Run at native resolution, adjusting geometry
Burn In or Image Persistence
Hardly happens anymore only on Plasma monitors. Fixed image on the image on the screen too long.
Oversized Images and Icons
adjust text and image sizing.
