IEEE 802.11 standard
Primary standard that works in two modes, infrastructure mode and ad hoc mode.
WAP stands for what?
Wireless Access Point. Uses infrastructure mode
Wireless Network Card or a NIC
A wireless network card or a Network Interface card runs the 802.11 standard infrastructure mode. WNC’s come in many different shapes and sizes. WNC is actually in the monitor for laptops.
SSID stands for what?
Service Set Identifier. The name of the wireless network. WIFI name.
Antennas
Are important for 802.11
Omni-directional antennas
looks like a vehicle antenna.
Dipole antenna
is basically two Omni-directional antennas pointing in opposite directions.
Patch Antenna
Is going to always have a flat surface. to get coverage in one direction
Highly Directional
Used for very long coverage.
ISM stands for what?
Industrial, Scientific, and Medical(ISM) radio bands, which is what the 802.11 standard is based off of.
802.11a
54Mbps, 5GHz
802.11b
11Mbps, 2.4GHz
802.11g
54Mbps, 2.4GHZ is only backwards compatible with 802.11b
802.11n
100Mbps, 2.4-5GHz is backwards compatible for other 802.11 standards.
