Chapter 7: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Stomata
Where CO2 in the air enters through small openings
Chloroplasts
Organelles that take in CO2 and H2O from the stomata, and carry on photosynthesis
Stroma
The semifluid interior inside of the plant cell membrane; Also uses enzymes to create carbohydrates
Thylakoids
Another membrane system in the stroma that forms flattened sacks.
Chlorophyll
A pigment located inside the thylakoid membrane, absorbs solar energy
Formula for photosynthesis
6 CO2 + 12 H2O —– 6 (CH2O) +6 H2O + 6 O2
(carbon dioxide + water + solar energy yields glucose + water + oxygen)
Root words of photosynthesis
Photo is based on the 1st part of the cycle, the light reactions. Synthesis is based on the 2nd part of the cycle, the synthesis of carbs in the Calvin cycle
Summary of light reactions
solar energy —- Chemical energy (ATP, NADPH)
Summary of Calvin Cycle
Chemical energy—-Carbs
(ATP, NADPH)
Photosystem
Consists of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, some carotenoids, and electron acceptor molecules
