Basic Chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
Ionic Bond
A
- Conducts electricity when dissolved in water
- Molecule breaks down into ions, or charged particles
2
Q
Covalent Bond
A
-Has a more difficult time dissolving in water, and cannot conduct electricity
- Electrons are being shared by nearby atoms
3
Q
Why is H20 special?
A
The bent structure stems from the extra unpaired electrons of oxygen, which allows water to have a slightly different charge on each end
4
Q
Hydrogen bond
A
A weak electrostatic attraction occurs between the partially positively-charged hydrogen atom of one water molecule and the partially negatively-charged oxygen atom of another
5
Q
Polar covalent bond
A
Electrons in the bond are shared unevenly, creating partial charges
6
Q
Non-polar covalent bond
A
Two atoms have similar electronegativity, and share electrons equally
