Chapter 7 - Learning Flashcards
the ability to collect stimuli (what occurs in the environment) with responses (behaviors or other actions)
Conditioning
learning that occurs when a neutral stimulus (ex. a bell) becomes associated with a stimulus (ex. food) that naturally produces behavior
Classical Conditioning
something (smell of food) that naturally triggers a response
-one of the senses
Unconditioned Stimulus (US)
the naturally occuring response (salivation) that follows the unconditioned stimulus
Unconditioned Response (UR)
a neutral stimulus that, after being repeatedly presented prior to the unconditioned stimulus, begins to evoke a similar response as the unconditional stimulus
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
an aquired response to the formerly neutral stimulus
Conditioned Response (CR)
learning that occurs based on the consequences of behavior
Operant Conditioning
the strenthening (increasing) of a response by presenting (adding) a typically pleasurable stimulus after the response
Positive Reinforcement
the strengthening (increasing) of a response by removing a typically unpleasant stimulus after the response
Negative Reinforcement
the weakening (decreasing) of a response by presenting (adding) a typically unpleasant stimulus after the response
Positive Punishment
the weakening (decreasing) of a response by removing a typically pleasant stimulus after the response
Negative Punishment
the tendency to respond to stimuli that resemble the original conditioned stimulus
Generalization
learning by observing the behavior of others
Observational Learning
