Expressing a General Statement
To make a general statement, end the sentence in the third person plural without mentioning the specific subject pronoun. This sentence structure is an alternative to the passive voice.
Kəlağayını ipəkdən hazırlayırlar. They make kelaghayi from silk.
Kəlağayı ipəkdən hazırlanır. Kelaghayi is made from silk.
Bakıda taksidən çox istifadə edirlər. They use taxis a lot in Baku.
Bakıda taksi çox istifadə edilir. Taxis are used a lot in Baku.
Suggestive/İnvitational Structures
Suggestive and invitational sentences are used when we ask someone to join us to do something, and we need the verb ‘gəl/gəlin’ and the main verb in its stem followed by the first person plural subject marker -aq/-ək.
Gəl bu filmə bu axşam baxaq. Let us watch this movie tonight.
Reported Past Tense Structure
Reported past tense structure uses suffix -mış/-miş/-muş/müş. This tense is close to present perfect structure in English. The formula is:
Stem of verb
Suffix -mış x4
Personal markers of the verb olmaq in the present tense form -əm/-sən/-dir/-ik/-siniz
Impersonal Structure with olmaz: “not allowed”
To state that something is not allowed or permitted, use “olmaz.” Steps include:
Infinitive of the verb
Olmaz
Ex: Taksidə siqaret çəkmək olmaz. One should not smoke in the taxi.
