Speaking in the Past Tense

A

Stem of a verb = when the infinitive marker-maq or -mək is dropped from the verb.
Past Tense marker = infix -di [x4]-
Subject markers = (-m, -n, -0*, -ıq x4, -nız x4, -lar/-lər)

30
Q

The Negative Conjunction nə…nə də (neither, nor)

A

Bayram günü nə dərs var, nə də iş. On holiday, there is neither class, nor work.
Bu yay mən nə işlədim, nə də səyahət etdim. This summer İ neither worked, nor traveled.
O, nə ingiliscə, nə də fransızca danışır. She speaks neither English, nor French.

Unlike English, in Azerbaijani sentences with this nə…nə də structure, the predicate can be used in the negative too.

Burada nə tələbə, nə də müəllim var. There is neither student, nor teacher here.
Burada nə tələbə, nə də müəllim yoxdur.

When nə…nə də combines two clauses that end with the same predicate, if the first clause has a predicate, the second needn’t have a predicate.

Bura nə Ankaradır, nə də Antalya.

31
Q

Stating necessity/obligation: “I must/must not” or “I have to/not have to do” something

A

Use the -malı/məli mood marker to indicate necessity or obligation to carry out a task. To create such a structure one needs the following elements of the speech

  1. The suffix -malı/-məli is added to the root of any given verb: Oxumalı, getməli, yeməli, görməli
  2. Adding the conjugated forms of the verb olmaq (–am/-əm, -san/-sən, -dır/dir, ıq/-ik, -sınız/-siniz, -dırlar/-dirlər)
32
Q

Suffix -gil

A

he suffix -gil is added to the names of people or common nouns denoting kinship, profession to refer to the family, community, or place represented by the person in the context.

Orxangil Orkhan’s family/relatives/place

Can be used in all 6 noun cases

Orxangil yayda bağda yaşayir. Orkhan’s family stays in the beach house in summer.
Orxangil bağı Xəzər dənizinin yaxınlığındadır. The beach house of Orkhanəs family is not far from the Caspian.
Orxangilə getdim. İ went to Orkhan’s place.
Organgili kənddə yaxşı tanıyırlar. Everybody knows well Orkhan’s family in the village.
Orxangildə həmişə çoxlu qonaqlar olur. There are always a lot of visitors at Orkhan’s place.
Orxangildən gəlirəm. İ am coming from Orkhanəs place/house.

33
Q

Postposition başqa/savayı/”with the exception of/besides”, “apart from”, and əlavə “in addition to”

A

The postpositions başqa, savayı, and əlavə are used with nouns or pronouns in the ablative case (-dan/-dən) to add more information to the stated fact or to emphasize that fact as an exception.

Səndən savayı, burda mən heç kimi tanımıram. İ know no one here but you.
Bakıdan başqa, mən Azərbaycanda heç yeri görmədim. Apart from Baku, İ saw no other place in Azerbaijan.

34
Q

Using two or more verbs in one sentence

A

Conjugate the main verb in the required tense
Use the verb preceding the main verb in the infinitive form and take the necessary case ending of a noun, depending on what case the main verb requires

(Infinitive form of the secondary verb + required case ending) + conjugation of the main verb

Kitab oxumağı sevirəm. İ like reading books.
O, dənizdə üzməyi xoşlamır. S/he does not care about swimming in the sea
