To Have with var

A

Use the verb var to express that something exists or to have. Put the subject and object in the genitive case.

Mənim lüğətim var. İ have a dictionary.
Sənin çantan var. You have a bag.
Onun dəftəri var. She has a notebook.

Use the word yoxdur to express not having something.

Bizim lüğətimiz yoxdur. We don’t have a dictionary.
Sizin çantanız yoxdur. You don’t have a bag.
Onların dəftərləri yoxdur. They don’t have notebooks.

29
Q

Expressing the idea of needing something

A

Use the verb lazımdır (to be necessary/needed). Add the dative suffix marker -a/-ə to the person who needs something and the object which is needed when used as the subject of a sentence. Use -y- as a buffer if the word ends in a vowel.

Müəllimə yeni xəritə lazımdır. The teacher needs a new map. (Lit: A new map is needed to the teacher.)
Onlara üç kompüter lazımdır. They need three computers. (Lit: Three computers are necessary to them.)
Sən mənə lazımsan. İ need you. (Lit: You are needed/necessary to me.)

30
Q

Making imperative from the infinitive.

A

Infinitives end in either -maq or -mək in Azerbaijani. İnfinitives follow two-way vowel harmony. If the root of a verb ends in a back vowel, then -maq is the infinitive marker. If the root ends in a front vowel, the infinitive marker is -mək.

Danışmaq - to speak
Gəlmək - to come
Getmək - to go
Öyrənmək - to learn

Form the imperative by deleting the infinitive marker (-maq or -mək) from the verb.

Danış - speak
Gəl - come
Get - go
Öyrən - learn

To make the imperative formal, add -ın/-in/-un/-ün. This makes the request polite.

Danışın - Please, speak
Gəlin - Please, come
Getin - Please, go
Öyrənin - Please, learn

Use -y- as a buffer letter if the root ends in a vowel.
