Chapter 7 Flashcards
Cementoenamel Junction
the tooth location where the enamel and the cementum meet
Closed position
The position obtained when the face of the curette is facing the foot surface when inserted into the pocket
Disclosing solution
a solution that selectively stains all soft debris, pellicle, and bacterial plaque on teeth
Furcation
the are in which the roots join the crown
Iatrogenic slab fracture
the breaking of the enamel layer on a tooth induced inadvertently by a medical professional
iM3 42-12 unit
a veterinary ultrasonic tooth scaler
Junctional epithelium
the epithelium which lies at the base of the gingival sulcus
Lateral recumbency
a clinical term used to describe an animal that is positioned on its side
Modified pen grasp
the preferred method for holding hand instruments in which the instrument is held with the thumb and index finger. The instrument rests on the index finger, and the middle, ring, and little fingers are extended. The middle ring and little fingers are then placed alongside the index finger
open position
the position obtained when the curette is moved over the calculus and repositioned so that the cutting surface is under the calculus ledge
Periodontal probe
an instrument in dentistry primarily used to measre pocket depths around the tooth in order to establish the state of health of the periodontium
Prophy
a shortened version of the word prophylaxis
Prophy angles
attachments on slow-speed or electric motor handpiece that are used to polish teeth
Prophy cup
the rubber cup used on the prophy angle for polishing teeth
Prophy paste
the paste used for polishing teeth
Prophylaxis
prevention of or protective treatment for disease
Pseudopocket
a pocket, adjacent to a tooth, resulting from gingival hyperplasia or swelling, and the periodontal membrane and alveolar bone are normal
Pull stroke
a hand instrument technique for the removal of calculus
Sealer
a product applied to a clean tooth surface with a sponge applicator or gloved finger that reduces plaque and artar formation by repelling water and preventing bacteria from attaching to the teeth
Sonic scaler
an ultrasonic scaler that operates at 6000 cycles per second with a 0.5-mm amplitude and an elliptic, figure of eight motion
Subgingival gross calculus
gross calculus formed adjacent to the opening of the submandibular salivary gland duct
Supragingival gross calculus
gross calculus formed adjacent to the opening of the submandibular salivary gland duct
supragingival scaling
removal of tartar from the teeth on the side of the gingival margin toward the dental crown
Ultrasonic Scaler
a type of scaler used to quickly remove smaller deposits of supragingival calculus
Sulcus
the groove between the surface of the tooth and t;he epithelium lining the free gingiva
