Chapter 1 Flashcards
Alveolar mucosa
the less densely keratinized gingival tissue covering the bone
Alveolus
the tooth socket
Ameloblasts
cells which take part in forming dental enamel
Anatomic numbering system
a numbering system used for medical record annotation in which the correct anatomic names of teeth are written out in full or abbreviated
Apical
toward the apex of the tooth
Brachycephalic
Having a short wide head. Characteristic of some breeds like boxers, pugs and bulldogs
Buccal
the direction toward the outside of the teeth, usually toward the cheeck
Canine tooth
the long, pointed tooth in the interdental space between incisors and cheek teeth, there s one in each jaw on both sides
Cementum
the bonelike connective tissue that attaches the periodontal ligament to the tooth
Coronal
the direction toward the crown
Distal
the portion farthest from the center of the dental arch
Dolichocephalic
having a narrow, long head. Characteristic of Collie, Greyhound, and Siamese
Furcation
The area in which the roots join the crown
Gingiva
the gums, consists of the mucosal tissue that lies over the alveolar bone
Incisors
the front teeth of either jaw
Interproximal area
the area between the teeth
Labial
the direction toward the outside of the teeth, usually toward the lips
Lateral palatine fold
The area where the to jaws join inn the back of the oral cavity
Mandible
the lower jaw
Maxilla
the upper jaw
Mesaticephalic
A skull with the cranium and nasal cavity about equal lengths. seen in the majority of breeds
Mesial
situated in the middle, median, nearer the center of the dental arch
Molars
the permanent, primary cheek teeth that are not preceded by premolars
Mucogingival line
the junction between the gingiva attached to underlying bone and the flap overlying the tooth
Occlusion
the way the teeth fit together. Dogs and cats have sectorial occlusion, which means chewing occurs on the sides of the teeth
Odontoblasts
Cells that line the pulp chamber and produce dentin
Palatal
the direction toward the inside of the maxillary tooth
Premolars
cheek teeth present in both generations found between the molars and canines
Rugae palatinae
Irregular ridges on hard palate mucosa shaped to facilitate the movement of food back toward the pharynx
Sublingual
the structures and surfaces beneath the tongue
Sulcus
the groove between the surface of the tooth and the epithelium lining the free gingiva
Temporomandibular joint
The hinge joint of the jaw that connects the mandible to maxilla
Triadan numbering system
a numbering system used for medical record annotation in which three numbers are used to identify each tooth. The first number identifies the quadrant, the second and third numbers identify the tooth which is always represented by two numbers
