Chapter 6 Flashcards
Anaerobic bacteria
bacteria that doesn’t require oxygen to survive
Biofilm
an aggregate of bacterial colonies protected by a polysaccharide complex
Calculus
mineralized deposits of calcium phosphate and carbonate, with organic matter, deposited on tooth surfaces,
May initiate caries and periodontal disease
Endotoxins
a heat-stable toxin present in the intact bacterial cell but no in a cell-free filtrates of culture of intact bacteria
Epithelial attachment
the epithelium attaching the gingiva to the tooth
Furcation
the area in which the roots join the crown
Gram-positive aerobic bacteria
bacteria that resist decoloorization by alcohol in Gram’s method of staining.
They require oxygen to survive
Halitosis
bad breath
Pathogenesis
the development of morbid conditions or of disease; More specifically the cellular events and reactions and other pathological mechanisms occurring in the development of disease
Periodontal disease
an inflammation and infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth, collectively called the periodontium
Plaque
a mass adhering to the enamel surface of a tooth, composed of a mixed colony of bacteria
a space resulting from the gingiva separating from the tooth due to inflammation
Sulcus
the groove between the surface of the tooth and the epithelium lining the free gingiva
Tartar
a yellowish film formed of calcium phosphate and carbonate, food particles, and other organic matter that is deposited on the teeth by saliva
