Chapter 3 Flashcards
Arkansas Stone
A sharpening stone used for final sharpening of an instrument that is already close to sharpness
Bur
A type of cutter used i a dental handpiece
Calculus removal forceps
a dental instrument that allows for quick removal of large pieces of calculus
Conical stone
a sharpening stone that is used to provide a final sharpening to the instrument by working on its face
Curette
a dental instrument used for the removal of calculus both supragingivally and subgingivally
Explorer
a hand instrument used to detect plaque and calculus. They are also used to explore for cavities and check for exposed pulp chambers
Flat stone
a stone used for sharpening dental equipment
Handle
the part of the hand instrument that is grasped. handles come in a variety of round, tapered, and hexagonal shapes
High-speed handpiece
a handpiece used for cutting teeth in extractions and making access holes into the teeth in root canal therapy
India Stone
a sharpening stone used for “coarse” sharpening of an overly dull instrument or for changing the plane of one or more of the sides of the instrument
Low-speed Handpiece
a handpiece used for polishing with prophy angles and for performing other dental procedures with contra angles
Periodontal probe
an instrument in dentistry primarily used to measure pocket depths around the tooth in order to establish the state of health of the periodontium
Piezoelectric
an ultrasonic scaler that uses crystals in the handpiece to pick up the vibration. These units have a wide, back and forth tip motion
Pigtail Explorer
A curved explorer that allows the operator to easily avoid touching the parts of the tooth that are not being explored
Power scaler
a scaler that converts electric or pneumatic energy into a mechanical vibration. When the power scaler is placed against the calculus, the vibration shatters it, freeing it from the tooth surface
Rotary scaler
A type of scaler that is discouraged due to the fact that it can easily damage the tooth. also the burs must be replaced often because they become dull very quuickly
Scaler
a dental instrument used for scaling calculus from the crown surface. these instruments are particularly useful in removing calculus from arrow but deep fissures such as that located on the buccal surface of the fourth premolar
Shank
the part of the hand instrument that joins the working end with the handle
Shepherd’s hook
the most commonly found explorer
Sonic Scaler
an ultrasonic scaler that operates at 6000 cycles per second with a 0.5-mm amplitude and an elliptic, figure-of-eight motion
Terminal shank
the part of the shank that is closest to the working end of the hand instrument
Three-way syringe
part of the dental unit that creates a water spray and an air spray. The water spray is used for irrigating a tooth surface and clearing away prophy paste, tooth shavings, and other debris. The air spray can be used to dry the field
Torque
the ability to overcome resistance to movement
Turbine
the internal portion of the high-speed handpiece that spins at an extremely high speed
Ultrasonic ferroceramic rod
an ultrasonic device that vibrates at 42,000 cycles per second. all sides of the tip are equally active
Ultrasonic instrument
dental instrument that converts energy from a power source into a sound wave
Ultrasonic metal strips/stacks
ultrasonic devices that vibrate at 18,000, 25,000, and 30,000 cycles per second. The amplitude of tip movement is between 0.01 and 0.05 mm, which is extremely narrow
Working end
the part of the hand instrument that comes in contact with the tooth
