Chapter 11 Flashcards
alternating current
the usual waveform of an AC power circuit is a sine wave
Apex
the pointed end of a cone-shaped part, or the end of a tooth root where blood vessels and nerves enter the tooth
Bisecting-angle technique
a radiographic technique obtained by visualizing an imaginary line that bisects the angle formed by the x-ray film and the structure being radiographed
Dental radiographic film
x-ray film used in the dental office
Dental x-ray machine
machine used to take x-ray
Dentin
one of the hard tissues of the teeth that constitutes most of its bulk. Lies between the pulp cavity and the enamel, and where it is not covered by enamel, it is covered by cementum, the third hard substance of the tooth
Digital X-ray system
digital or direct radiology system can include a sensor or phosphorous plate, also known as indirect or computerized radiology
Dilaceration
an abnormally shaped root resulting from trauma during tooth development
Direct current
DC is the unidirectional flow of electric charge
Edentulous
the absence of teeth
Embedded tooth
a tooth that is usually covered in bone, has not erupted into the oral cavity,, and is not likely to erupt
Exodontics
the branch of dentistry dealing with extraction of teeth
Fistula
any abnormal, tubelike passage within body tissue
Impacted tooth
an unerupted or partially erupted tooth that is prevented from erupting further by any structure
Interproximal
the are between adjacent surfaces of adjoining teeth
Intraoral film
nonscreen radiographic film that fits neatly into the oral cavity. It can be processed in 1 to 2 minutes with minimal loss of detail
Kilovoltage peak
the highest kilovoltage used in producing a radiograph
Lamina dura
a radiographic term referring to the dense cortical bone forming the wall of the alveolus. It appears radiographically as a bony white line next to the dark line of the periodontal space
Lamina lucida
a radiographic term referring to the periodontal space between the lamina dura and tooth. It is occupied by the periodontal ligament
Lucency
an area of an x-ray image that represents the absorption of less radioactive energy than the surrounding tissue. Lucent areas appear dark compared tot he surrounding area
Milliamperage
measurement of x-ray current
Odontoblasts
cells that line the pulp chamber and produce dentine
Parallel Technique
a radiographic technique indicated to evaluate the caudal mandibular teeth and nasal cavity
Pulse
measurement of setting certain dental x-ray machine timers
SLOB Rule
same lingual opposite buccal (SLOB) rule used to identify roots that are laying side by side
