Chapter 5 Flashcards
Bradycardia
slowness of the heartbeat, in dogs and cats to less than 60bpm
Bupivacaine
a local anesthetic. It is the drug of choice at 0.5% solution of 5 mg/ml
Caudal mandibular block
a regional nerve block in which all of the teeth of the mandible on the side of infiltration as well as adjacent bone and soft tissue are blocked
Caudal maxillary block
a regional nerve block in which both the maxillary nerve and the sphenopalatine nerve/ganglia are anesthetized
Hypotension
Diminished tension, lowered blood pressure. In animals, almost the only occurrence is in severe peripheral circulatory failure, especially traumatic, toxemic, or anaphylactic shock
Hypoventilation
reduction in the amount of air entering the pulmonary alveoli
Infiltration blocks
a method of local anesthesia. Rather than blocking an entire quadrant, infiltration blocks block only the are where the infiltration has been administered
Regional anesthesia
a method of local anesthesia in which an entire quadrant is blocked
Rostral mandibular block
a regional nerve block in which the inferior alveolar nerve within the mandibular canal via the middle mental foramen is anesthetized
Rostral maxillary block
a regional nerve block in which the infraorbital nerve is infiltrated as it exits the infraorbital canal
Toxicity
the characteristic or quality of being poisonous, especially the degree of virulence of a toxic microbe or of a poison
