CHAPTER 7 Flashcards
general look of long bone
longer than wide, shaft,
compact bone on outside and bone marrow inside, contains spongy bone at ends
Diaphysis, epiphyses, metaphysis, marrow cavity
D: shaft of bone (compact bone)
E:ends of bone (spongy bone)
M: between D and E
MC: contains yellow marrow inside
Periosteum, endosteum, aurticular cartilage
P: tissue covering bone surface
E: lining of marrow cavity
AC: at ends of bones, absorbs shock
structure of flat bone
spongy bone sandwich, compact bone covering spongy bone
name the four bone cells and function (3 together 1 alone)
Osteogenic: stem cells of bone tissue
Osteoblasts: calcium build up
osteocytes: matures bones
Osteoclast: removes calcium salt and recycle bone matrix, release enzymes for growth and repair and homeostasis
structure of compact bone
makes up most of diaphysis and lies over spongy bone in epiphyses
-protection, support, stress resistance
-arranged in units called osteons containing osteocytes around central canal for blood vessels
structure of spongy bone
consists of trabeculae surrounding many red marrow filled spaces
-found where bones aren’t heavily stressed, mostly in short, flat, irregular bones besides epiphysis in long bones
