Chapter 7 Flashcards
Closed-ended questions
Questions that offer respondents a limited number of response options. Multiple choice questions.
Cluster sampling
A method of sampling in which clusters of individuals are identified. Clusters are sampled, and then individuals in each cluster are included in sample.
Confidence intervals
The confidence intervals serves as a range of plausible values that are likely to be observed, this is a quantification of our uncertainty around our estimates, with wider intervals indicating greater uncertainty
Convenience sampling
A type of non probability sampling that involves selecting participants in a haphazard manner and with out regard to representativeness of the sample
External validity
The degree to which study results, based on sample, may be generalized to the population that the sample was drawn from.
Focus group
A qualitative method of data collection in which six to ten people are interviewed together about a particular topic
Graphic rating
A type of closed ended response scale option where two words appear on either side of a solid line. A mark closer to one of the words is made to indicate preference
Inattentive responding
Providing answer that are not thoughtful responses to questions
Interviewer bias
Unintentional or intentional influnce on a respondent exerted by an interviewer which might encourage certain responses consistent with the interviewers expectations
Non-probability sampling
A type of sampling procedures in which one cannot specify or does know, the probability that any member of the population will be included in the sample
Open ended questions
Questions that allow respondent to answer in any way they wish
Panel study
In survey research, administering questions to the same people at two or more points in time. Also know as longitudinal design
Population
The interest group which sampling comes from
Probability sampling
Type of sampling procedure in which one is able to specify the probability that any member of the population will be included in the sample
Purposing sampling
A type of convenience sampling procedurw condictwd to obtain predetermined types of individual for the sample
Quota sampling
Sampling procedure in which the sample is chosen to refelct the numerical composition of various subgroups in the population. A comvenience sampling technique is used to obtain the sample
Random sampling
When everyone in a given population is equally likely to have been slected to participate in the study, the sample is said to be random
Rating scale
Closed ended response option that asks participants to indivate the degree to which they agree with a particular statement
Response rate
The percentage of people selected for a sample who actually complete a survey
Response set
A pattern of responding to questions that is not related to the content of the questions themselves and this provides inaccurate information
Sampling
The process of choosing members of a population of interest to be included in a sample that is studied
Sampling frame
The individuals or clusters of individuals in a population who might actually be selected for inclusion in the sample.
Semantic differential scale
A type of closed ended response where two words appear on either side of a series of dashed lines. Participants place a mark on the dash indicating their relative preference for one or the other word
Simple random sampling
Sampling provedurw in which each meber of thw population has equal probability of being included in the sample
