chapter 62 vidlec part 1 Flashcards
sudden focal neurologic deficit caused by cerebrovascular disease
cerebrovascular accident
umbrella term that refers to a functional abnormality of the CNS that occurs when the normal blood supply to the brain is disrupted
cerebrovascular disorder
There is a blockage/hemorrhage that leads the brain to not get enough oxygen
cerebrovascular disorder
Also called as “cerebrovascular accident”
ischemic stroke
Also called as “brain attack”
ischemic stroke
caused by embolus or thrombus that result to occlusion
ischemic stroke
a sudden lost of function resulting from disruption of the blood supply to a part of the brain
ischemic stroke
transient or TEMPORARY episode of neurologic dysfunction caused by decreased blood supply to the brain
transient ischemic attack
this stroke do not last for 24 hours then back to normal
transient ischemic attack
temporary blockage occurs to the artery in the brain
transient ischemic attack
also called as the MINI STROKE
transient ischemic attack
2 MAJOR CATEGORIES OF STROKE
ischemic
hemorrhagic
The most common type of stroke
ischemic stroke
this stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks/narrows an artery leading to the brain
ischemic stroke
artery that supplies oxygen to the brain
carotid arteries
obstruction or blockage in a blood vessel
embolism
formation of a blood clot (thrombus) inside the artery walls/bv
thrombosis
this is common to conditions with cardiac valve problem due to atrial fibrillation/cardiac arrhythmias
embolism
this is common to px with hyperlipidemia and atheroslerosis
thrombosis
This happens when an artery in the brain LEAKS OR BURST (rupture) which caused by weakened vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain
hemorrhagic stroke
this stroke is caused by:
1. Brain Aneurysm
2. Uncontrolled HPN
3. Older age
hemorrhagic stroke
what causes hemorrhagic stroke
brain aneurysm
uncontrolled hpn
older age
what causes ischemis stroke
embolism
thrombosis
5 TYPES OF ISCHEMIC STROKE
- large artery thrombotic stroke
- small penetrating artery thrombotic stroke
- cardiogenic embolic stroke
- cryptogenic stroke
- others
type of ischemic stroke: usually seen in older people, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and diabetes mellitus
large artery thrombotic stroke
type of ischemic stroke: are caused by atherosclerotic plaque in large blood vessels
large artery thromotic stroke
most common type of ischemic stroke; affects on or more vessels; also called as lacunar stroke
small penetrating artery thrombotic strokes
ischemic stroke that occurs when the heart pumps unwanted materials (debris like blood clots) in the brain circulation resulting occlusion
cardiogenic embolic stroke
type of ischemic stroke: associated with cardiac dysrhythmias, usually atrial fibrillation
cardiogenic embolic stroke
strokes without a known cause
cryptogenic stroke
when blood flow to one of the SMALL ARTERIES DEEP within the brain becomes blocked
lacunar stroke
