Chapter 6 Urinary Diseases Flashcards
Epispadias
Congenital defect in which the urinary meatus is located on the upper surface of the penis
Hypospadias
Congenital defect in which the urinary meatus is located on the underside of the penis
Polycystic kidney disease
Condition in which the kidney contains many cysts and is enlarged
Renal calculus
Stone in the kidney
Renal failure
Loss of kidney function resulting in its inability to remove waste products from the body and maintain electrolyte balance
Renal hypertension
Elevated blood pressure resulting from kidney disease
Urinary retention
Abnormal accumulation or urine in the bladder because of an inability to urinate
Urinary suppression
Sudden stoppage or urine formation
Urinary tract infection
Infection of one or more organs of the urinary tract
Acute renal failure
Sudden and severe reduction in renal function resulting in a collection of metabolic waste in the body
Chronic kidney disease
A progressive irreversible loss of renal function and the onset of uremia
End stage renal disease
Is what chronic renal failure is called when kidney function is too poor to sustain life
KUB kidney, ureter, bladder
Simple radio graphic image of the abdomen. Often used to view the three to determine size, shape and location or to diagnose intestinal obstruction
Blood urea nitrogen
Blood test that measures the amount of urea in the blood. An increase detects abnormality in renal function
Creatinine
Blood test that measures the amount of creatinine in the blood. Elevated amount may indicated impaired kidney function.
