Alzheimer disease
The most common type, making up 60 to 80 % of all cases. Women are more affected than men and it usually occurs after she 60. The disease is slowly progressive and usually results in dementia in 5 to 10 years.
Vascular or multiple infarct dementia
Affects 10 to 20% of patients with dementia and usually affects older patients.
Central nervous system infection dementia
May be caused by herpes simplex encephalitis or may be seen with AIDS patients.
Lewy body dementia
Usually a rapid progressive form of dementia seen with Parkinson disease
Parkinson disease
May develop in patients with advanced dementia
Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome
A form of dementia found with chronic alcoholism
Normal pressure hydrocephalus
May cause dementia in elderly individuals and can be treated with a ventricular peritoneal shunt.
