Chapter 5 Respiratory Devices Flashcards
Ventilation profusion scanning
Procedure performed by inhaling radionuclide ( ventilation) and injecting a radionuclide (profusion) into an artery to show how well the inhaled air is distributed
Acid fast bacilli smear
Test performed on the sputum to determine the presence of fast acid bacilli which can cause tuberculosis
Sputum smear culture and sensitivity
Test performed on the sputum to determine the presence of pathogenic bacteria
Arterial blood gasses
Tests performed on the arterial blood to determine levels of oxygen, Carbon dioxide and pH (acidity)
Peak flow meter
Instrument used to measure how fast air can be pushed out of the lung, used to monitor asthma
Pulmonary function tests
Performed to measure breathing capacity and used to determine external respiratory function
Pulse oximetry
Measures oxygen in the blood
Auscultation
Listening to sounds within the body with a stethoscope
Percussion
Tapping the body surface with fingers to determine the density of the part beneath the sound obtained. A dull sound indicates the presence of fluid.
Purified protein derivative
Test performed on individuals who have recently been exposed to tuberculosis
Stethoscope
Instrument used to hear internal body sounds for auscultation and blood pressure measurement
