Chapter 6 (Section 2) Flashcards
Memory Storage
The Atkinson/Shiffrin Theory
Focuses on the way information is processed and stored through three sequential stages or systems of memory.
Three Sequential Stages/ System of Memory
- 1st Stage: Sensory Memory
- 2nd Stage: Short Term Memory (STM)
- 3rd Stage: Long Term Memory (LTM)
First Stage: Sensory Memory
The first storage stage of memory briefly stores sensory impressions (Sights, Sounds, Smells, Tastes, and etc)
Sensory Memory
All of the information that enters our memory must pass through our senses
Sensory Memory
First Stage: Sensory Memory
Iconic Memory (Sensory)
Visual sensory memory lasting only a fraction of a second
First Stage: Sensory Memory
Echoic Memory (Sensory)
Brief memory of something a person has just heard. (Lasts 2-4 seconds)
First Stage: Sensory Memory
Haptic Memory (Sensory)
The memory for touch
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Sensory Memory moves to . . .
Short Term Memory
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Limited in both capacity and duration
Short Term Memory (STM)
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Information is encoded visually, acoustically, verbally, or semantically
Short Term Memory (STM)
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Limited Capacity
The formula for how much informationo we can store in STM is 7+ or -2 bits of information in Long Term Memory (LTM)
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Increases the limited capacity of STM
Chunking
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Chunking
Involves reorganizing and combining small bits of information to larger bits of information/chunks
Second Stage: Short Term Memory
Limited Duration
Information can only be held for about 30 seconds
