Listening
active process of making meaning out of someone’s message
- attending (paying attention) to someone’s message
Hearing
passive process of listening (receiving and perceiving sounds)
Mneumonics
devices that can aid short and long term memory
Pseudolistening
Pretending to listen
- appearing to listen, but not actually paying attention
Selective attention
listening only to what one wants to hear and ignoring the rest
Glazing over
daydreaming or allowing the mind to wander while another person is speaking
- actively trying to listen, but brain starts to wander
Rebuttal tendency
the propensity to debate a speaker’s point and formulate a reply while that person is still speaking
- forming a response when the person is still talking
2 reasons why this is bad:
1. Energy that goes towards listeing goes towards forming response instead
2. Miss important information
Closed Mindedness
the tendency NOT to listen to anything which one disagrees with
- ex: not listening to you because you’re using slang or profanity
Competitive interrupting
This practice of using interuptions to take control of the conversation
- all about control, speaking over you when you’re making good points
Confirmation bias
the tendency to pay attention only to information that supports one’s values and beliefs, while discounting or ignoring information that doesn’t
Skepticism
A method of questioning that involves evaluating evidence for a stated claim
- looking if claim is supported by evidence
Stonewall
responding to another person’s words with silence and lack of expression
- eyelashes, blank stare
Paraphrase
restating in your own words what a speaker has said, to show that you understand.
Vividness effect
the tendency of dramatic, shocking events to distort one’s perceptions of reality
information overload
the state of being overwhelmed by the enormous amount of information encountered each day
