what was the function of the church and churchmen?
most people would belong to a catholic church, there would be over 8000 churches and they would provide the basis for day-to-day life. They would offer charity and community to people. There was a sense of social control that was allowed to take place as there were employment opportunities, though there was a hierarchy in the church and the chance for few to advance to cardinal like cardinal Wolsey.
What was the political significance of the church?
The pope would be head of a large amount of power in northern Italy, Henry would seek a dispensation in order to marry Elizabeth.
The relationship between the church and the state can be seen to be Erastian this is where the king is seen to hold most of the power and retain true control.
Henry would also use the church as a way to reward those in a high political office.
Canterbury and York were the two main provinces, key churchmen would have a lot of power.
The people whom would have the most senior role in the church would also have a high level in the aristocracy, which made it easy for them to gain political power.
John Morton and Richard Fox are key examples of this.
some offices of the state would be monopolised by clergymen the abbots would have a shared membership with the House of Lords.
what was the significance of the religious community, belief and services?
the church would control the basic way that someone would think, there would be the idea that to reach heaven you would have to uphold as many of the seven sacrements as you could.
mass and transubstantiation was also seen as a vital ritual.
this was also emphasises by corpus christi which was one of the most important festivals of the 15th century.
what was the significance of the church’s social role?
People would often leave money to the church, this may be in the way of the dying or the lay people.
Benefactors would leave money for the foundation the chantries.
The confraternity would also provide for the funeral costs of members, guilds would be popular and some of them would run schools.
Pilgrimage would also be another way that people would adorn to their religion, this would take place at times like Rogation Sunday they would pray for the parish and walk around the walls.
There would also be an emphasis on individual religious experiences and this would be evident in people like Margaret Beaufort who would donate money to charity.
what was the significance of monastic orders?
by 1500 1% of adults males would be monks, the most common would be Benedictines, many Benedictine houses would be large. There was also Cistercians and Carthusians, their monasteries would be locate in more remote areas and it would be evident that monks that would belong to the larger houses would come from the wealthier parts of society.
what is the significance of friars?
they would be supported by charitable donation, there would be three main orders the Dominicans, the Franciscans and the Augustinas.
what is the signifnace of nunneries?
they would have much less prestige as they would have women that would not be getting married, though bridgettien foundation at Syon near Isleworth in middlesex was the exception as this was richer than other nunneries.
what was the significance of lollards, heresy and anticlericalism.
Lollardy which would be founded by John Wycliffe would emerge in England in the second half of the 14th century. This would favour the bible to be translated into English. These views were considered to be heresy. it has been suggested that when there was criticism of the church this was often politically motivated.
what was the significance of humanism?
this was the development of reneissance, they would be believers in the idea of the catholic faith and the idea of free will. John Colet would be an influential humanist teacher he would be critical of the standards of the clergy. Erasmus, whom would be critical of the abuses of the church, would be a key ally, whom would also have a friendship with Thomas More.
the significnace in the development in education?
There would be song and reading schools, there would be 53 new grammar schools between 1460 and 1509. There would also be the study of latin which would continue. There would also be the university education with Oxford and Cambridge.
what was the significance of Drama and music?
plays would be presented in association with the church. There would be mystery plays that would be performed at Corpus Christi, these were a chance for religious messages to be portrayed.
Music would also be enjoyed for example there would be the bagpipe, carols would also be popular.
what was the significance of art and architecture?
There was a large amount of investment that was placed into churches this would include Saint Mary Redcliffe in Bristol. Though tastes would begin to change towards the end of 1509 when humanist ideas would reach England.
