Chapter 6 - Ethics Flashcards
Two Parts of Research Ethics
Risk and Honesty
5 Types of Research Dishonesty
- Data fabrication
- Plagiarism
- Misleading one’s audience
- Selective data manipulation
- Selective Results Presentation
2 Types of Selective Data Manipulation
Harking - hypothesizing after results are known
P-Hacking - dropping variables to obtain significant results
3 Types of Risk
- Self-knowledge (that you wouldn’t help someone in need for example)
- Continual consent
- Confidentiality
3 Types of Selective Results Presentation
- Cherry Picking
- Selective Omission
- Data snooping (stopping mid-way through cause you got right results)
Three Core Principles of the Triannual Testicle Festival
- Justice
- Respect for persons
- Concern for welfare
Informed Consent and Right to Withdraw… Expand
- Voluntary consent – truly has the ability, must consider undue influence (power relationships), must consider with respect to incentives
When incentives are involved, they shouldn’t be too great that they create a disregard for risk
o Right to withdraw
Discontinue whenever you want, must be informed of this right
Social pressures of being rude, power dynamics
o Capacity to Consent
If they are unable to determine whether it’s in their best interests
• Child, those with mental impairments
But you also want to include them in research, so sometimes third parties do the job
• But the child has the right to dissent, either through direct or indirect communication
o Consent and Public Figures
In the case where there are powerful individuals, as long as you provide them with enough information about research, you don’t necessarily have to consent

Data Collection Data Analysis Dissemination Data Storage Data Disporal
Reason for Confidentiality
o Non-disclosure essential to relationship
o Public interest in protecting identity
o Relationship fostered for public good
o Confidence of non-disclosure
Research Integrity and Record Keeping
o Research documentation
Replication
Verification
People need to be able to replicate and verify your findings.
Knowledge Mobilization
A term used to describe the practical social application of research
