what is affect?
a broad range of feelings that people experience
what are emotions?
Intense, discrete, and short-lived feeling experiences that are often caused by a specific event.
what are moods?
Feelings that tend to be longer-lived and less intense than emotions and that lack a contextual stimulus.
what are moral emotions?
Emotions that have moral
implications.
Can emotions be neutral?
no, they have to be either positive or negative
what is positive affect?
A mood dimension that consists of specific positive emotions such as excitement and enthusiasm at the high end and boredom and sluggishness at the low end
what is negative affect?
A mood dimension that consists of emotions such as nervousness, stress, and anxiety at the high end.
what is positivity offset?
The tendency of most individuals to experience a mildly positive mood at zero input (when nothing in particular is going on).
what is affect intensity?
Individual differences in the strength with which individuals experience their emotions.
what is illusory correlation?
The tendency of people to associate two events when in reality there is no connection.
what is emotional labor?
An employee’s organizationally desired emotions during interpersonal transactions at work.
what are felt emotions?
An individual’s actual emotions.
what are displayed emotions?
Emotions that are organizationally required and considered appropriate in a given job.
what is surface acting?
Hiding one’s feelings and forgoing emotional expressions in response to display rules.
what is deep acting?
Trying to modify one’s true feelings based on display rules.
what is emotional dissonance?
Inconsistencies between the emotions people feel and the emotions they project.
what is the affective events theory (AET)?
A model suggesting that workplace events cause emotional reactions on the part of employees, which then influence workplace attitudes and behaviors.
what is emotional intelligence (EI)?
The ability to detect and to manage emotional cues and information.
what is mindfulness?
Reception, attention, and awareness of the present moment, events, and experiences.
what is emotional contagion?
The process by which peoples’ emotions are caused by the emotions of others.
