Chapter 6: Disorder of Blood Flashcards
What is the meaning of blood disorders?
They are conditions that impair the formation and function of red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets.
Explanation of Iron-Deficiency Anemia:
Without sufficient iron, blood cannot produce enough of the substance in red blood cells to carry oxygen effectively.
Explanation of Sickle Cell Anemia:
Red blood cells change their shape from a normal disc shape to a crescent, or sickle, shape. These cells are no longer flexible and burst apart as they move through blood vessels.
Explanation of Pernicious Anemia:
Decrease in red blood cells that occurs when the intestines cannot properly absorb vitamin B12
Explanation of Leukemia:
A type of cancer where the bone marrow produce abnormal white blood cells that don’t function properly.
Explain Sepsis:
A life threatening condition that occurs when the body has a overwhelming immune response to an infectious organism that has entered the bloodstream.
