Word classes
The category in which words fall.
Clause
Constituent of a sentence that has its own subject and verb.
Phrase
Constituent of a sentence that is composed of two or more words that express a single idea but do not form a complete sentence.
Noun phrase
A phrase that primarily has a referential function.
Referential function
When the main function is to refer to certain entities.
Verb phrase
A phrase that primarily has a predicative function.
Predicative function
When the main function is to express what is said about the subject.
Attributive function
When the main function is to attribute properties or features to something else.
Adjective phrase
A phrase with an attributive function that is primarily used to specify a property of a noun.
Adverbial phrase
A phrase with an attributive function that is primarily used to specify a property of something that is not a noun.
Relational function
When the main function is to indicate the relation between the phrase and the surrounding context.
Adpositional phrase
A phrase that primarily has a relational function.
Head
The obligatory core of a constituent.
Modifiers
Optional additions to the head in a phrase.
