Syllables
Small group of phonemes that normally contains one vowel.
Syllabification
The process of grouping phonemes into syllables.
Onset
The beginning of a syllable, everything before the vowel.
Rhyme
The part of the syllable that is not onset, this is the vowel and everything that follows.
Nucleus
Obligatory part of a syllable that contains a vowel.
Coda
The last part of the syllable, consisting of consonants.
Syllabic writing
Writing systems where each syllable has its own symbol.
Stressed syllable
Syllable marked by a higher tone, increased volume or greater length than comparable unstressed syllables.
Sentence stress
The part of the sentence that carries stress.
Foot
The rhyming unit constituted by a stressed syllable.
Trochee
A foot with two syllables, the first of which is stressed and the second unstressed.
Iamb
A foot in which the first syllable is unstressed and the second syllable is stressed.
Phonotactics
The sub-discipline of linguistics that concerns itself with the ways in which syllables can be built up from strings of phonemes.
