Clitic
A word that cannot have a stress of its own.
Iconicity
When there is no direct relation between the form of a word and its meaning.
Open word classes
Classes to which any speaker of the language can add new words; content words belong to this class.
Closed word classes
Word classes to which new words cannot be easily added; grammatical elements belong to this class.
Lemma
A heading in a dictionary.
Lexicography
The discipline which is concerned with the production of various kinds of dictionaries.
Polysemy
When one word has various different, but not unrelated, meanings of a single lemma.
Homonyms
Words that have different lemmas that happen to coincide in form.
Ambiguity
When something is unclear.
Semantic relation
The relation between the meaning of words.
Hyponymy
Refers to semantic subordination and involves hierarchic relations within the lexicon.
Antonymy
Refers to semantic opposition.
Synonymy
Refers to the identity of meaning; when the meaning is the same.
Denotation
The meaning of a word as distinguished from the ideas or meanings associated with it.
Connotation
The emotional and stylistic value and social meaning of a word.
