chapter 6 - cell metabolism / enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
function of an enzyme
A
- a protein that allows chemical reactions to take place at normal body temperature
2
Q
what is activation energy
A
- energy required to start a chemical reaction
- enzymes decrease activation energy
3
Q
what is cell metabolism
A
- all chemical reactions that take place in cells / body
4
Q
types of cell metabolism
A
- catabolic: breaks down larger molecules into smaller molecules
- anabolic: joins smaller substrate molecules together to form larger molecules
5
Q
what is a substrate
A
- reaction which binds to the enzyme (molecule on which an enzyme reacts on)
6
Q
what is an active site
A
- the part of the enzyme that combines with the substrate
7
Q
what is the lock and key hypothesis
A
- states that the active sit specifically matches the shape of the substrate molecule (perfect fit)
8
Q
what are the factors affecting enzyme activity / rate of chemical reactions
A
- concentration of enzymes: regulation of enzymes results in control of reactions and their rate
- concentration of substrate: affects rate of reaction
- temperature: optimum temp. 30-40 (45 results in deactivation)
- pH: each enzyme has an optimum pH where the reaction takes place
- presence of co-factors: ions, non-proteins, change shape of active site, allows enzymes to function not just join
- presence of co-enzymes: non-protein, organic
- enzyme inhibitors: slow / stop enzyme activity, get in the way
9
Q
what is an enzyme
A
- biological molecule that catalyse (increase rate of) chemical reactions
- protein
- acts on a substrate
- never breaks down
