chapter 5 - tissues Flashcards
describe the function structure and location of epithelial tissue
function: covering organs or the lining of organs
structure: simple one cell layer or stratified layers, very close together, types (cuboidal, squamous, columnar)
location: the lining of the heart, kidney, intestine, liver, lungs, bladder and skin
describe the function structure and location of connective tissue
function: provides support for the body and helps hold body parts together
structure: cells are not close together, separated by a non-cellular material called matrix, consists of cells and extra cellular fibres
location: tissue, bone, cartilage, blood, dense and loose connective tissue, ligaments and tendons
describe the function structure and types of muscle tissue
function: consists of specialised cells that contract when stimulated (shorten)
structure: long and thin cells with muscle fibres
types: three types, skeletal, smooth and cardiac
describe the function structure and location of muscle tissue: skeletal
function: voluntary control - contraction
structure: stripes, striated, multi nucleated
location: legs, arms, facial muscles
describe the function structure and location of muscle tissue: smooth / non-striated
function: involuntary control - contraction
structure: long tapered cells
location: lining / walls of all internal organs
describe the function structure and location of muscle tissue: cardiac
function: involuntary contraction of the hart muscle
structure: striated, branched, tapering at the ends
location: the heart walls
describe the function and types of nervous tissue
function: contains specialised cells that conduct impulses
types: two types, sensory neuron and motor neuron
describe the function structure and location of nervous tissue: sensory neuron
function: carry information from sense receptors to the central nervous system (brain)
structure: axon, nucleus
location: all organs with sense receptors
describe the function structure and location of nervous tissue: motor neuron
function: carry out electric impulses from the central nervous system (brain) to the muscles or glands
structure: cell body / nucleus, axon, axon terminal and dendrites
location: all organs, in particular the muscles of glands of those organs
what is the structural organisation of the cell
