What is motivation?
set of energetic forces that originates both within and outside an employee, iniates work-related effort, and determines the direction, intensity, and persistence.

The belief that exerting a high level of effort will result in the successful perfoamnce of some task.

belief that a person has the capabilities to needed to execute behaviors required for success.

vicarious experiences

What is instrumentality
belief that succesful performance will result in some outcomes
What is valence
anticipated value of the outcomes associated with perfoamnce
What are needs
cognitive groupings or clusters of outcomes that are viewed as having critical psychologcal or physiological consequences
What are some extrinsic motivators?
Pay, bonuses, promotions, benefits, etc
Intrinsic Motivators?
enjoyment, interestingness, skill development, etc
How can expectancy be lowered?
Lack of resources
Lack of supportive leadership
Low self-efficacy
How can instrumentality be diminished?
Not keeping your word
Not having budget to keep promises
Not having good reward systems
What is Maslow’s hierarchy?
Psyiologcal->Safety->belongingness->esteem->self-actualization
