Chapter 6 Flashcards
Define Telecommunications
The electronic transmission of signals for communications; enables organizations to carry out their processes and tasks through effective computer networks
Explain the general model of telecommunications
-A sending unit (a person, a computer system, a terminal, or another device), sends the message signal to a telecommunications device
-The telecommunications device may convert it into a different form
-The telecommunications device then sends the signal through a medium.
-Another telecommunications device connected to the receiving computer (6) receives the signal
-The process can be reversed, and the receiving unit can send another message to the original sending unit
Define a telecommunications medium
Any material substance that carries an electronic signal to support communications between a sending and receiving device
Define a telecommunications device
A hardware component that facilitates electronic communication
What is an important characteristic of telecommunications?
The speed at which information is transmitted
What do advances in technology allow us to do?
allow us to communicate rapidly with clients and co-workers almost anywhere in the world
Explain synchronous communication
The receiver gets the message almost instantly when its sent
Explain asynchronous communication
There is a measurable delay between the sending and receiving of the message
What are the telecommunication media types?
-Guided transmission
-Wireless transmission
List the media types under guided transmission
-Twisted-pair wire
-Coaxial cable
-Fiber-optic cable
-Broadband over power lines
-List the media types under wireless transmission
-Microwave: Terrestrial and satellite
-3G-5G wireless communication
-Wi-Fi
-Bluetooth
-Infrared
Define channel bandwidth
The rate at which data is exchanged over a communication channel
Explain broadband communications
A telecommunications system in which a very high rate of data exchange is possible
-Can exchange data very quickly
Define Narrowband communications
A telecommunications system that supports a much lower rate of data exchange
Evaluate twisted pair wires
Advantages: Widely available
Disadvantages: Transmission speed and distance limitations
Evaluate Coaxial cable
Advantages: Cleaner and faster data transmission
Disadvantages: Expensive
Define terrestrial microwaves
High frequency signal transmitted by line-of-sight devices so that the line of sight between the transmitter and receiver must be unobstructed
Define satellite microwaves
Receive signal from the Earth station, amplifies the weak signal and rebroadcasts it at a different frequency
Define 3-5G wireless communication
5G brings higher data transmission rates, lower power consumption, higher connection reliability with fewer dropped calls, increased geographical coverage and lower infrastructure costs
Define Wifi
A medium range wireless telecommunications technology
Define Bluetooth
A wireless communications specification that describes how electronic devices can be interconnected over distances
Define Near field communication
A very short-range wireless connectivity technology designed for consumer electronics
Explain infrared transmission
-It sends signals through the air via light waves
-It can be used to connect peripheral devices and establish a wireless network, with the advantage that devices can be moved and installed without expensive wiring and network
