Ars Antiqua
Latin for Old Art. Music notation using rhythmic modes.
Ars Nova
Latin for New Art. created meters that correspond to our 9/8, 6/8, 3/4, and 2/4. ***innovations in rhythmic notation

* Secular songs: polyphonic, use “formes fixes”

One of three formes fixes (fixed forms) of Guillaume de Machaut’s secular songs. aabC rhyme scheme.
Ballata
The Italian equivalent of the French Virelai
Caccia
popular-style melody set in strict canon with 2 voices. Caccia means “chase”, as in the voices may feel like they are chasing eachother.
Color
In an Isorhythmic Motet, color is the repeating melodic pattern
Formes Fixes
Latin for Fixed Form. Refers to the three forms of French poetry from Machaut. ballade, rondeau, and virelai.
Isorhythmic Motet
Tenors are composed of segments of identical rhythm that recur throughout the piece. Repeated melodic pattern = color, repeated rhythmic pattern = talea.
Landini
Italian composer of Tranceto period. Like the Italian version of Guillaume de Machaut.
Madrigal
- song for 2 or 3 voices without instrumental accompaniment
- all voices sing same text
a. idyllic, pastoral, satirical, or love poem - 2 or more 3-line stanzas set to same music
