Mode
A type of scale with a set of characteristic melodic and harmonic behaviors. Ancient Greek modes were identified (but later writers applied these old terms to new concepts). Two types of church modes: authentic and plagal.
Monophonic
Music with a single melody. No harmony.
Orpheus
Ancient Greek bard, musician, poet. Greeks believed music originated from gods. His music had power even over Hades.
Pythagoras
Ancient Greek philosopher. Thought that music was an orderly system interlocked with nature. Discovered that numerical relationships between pitches and ratios represent intervals. ex octave is 2:1. Created the scale.
Tetrachords
A series of four notes separated by three intervals. Diatonic, chromatic, and enharmonic.
