Chapter 6 Flashcards
Two strategies used to asses soil are
test pits
test borings
test pits
reach a depth up to 8 feet
test borings
are used when a test pit may not reach deep enough
Wall footings AKA Strip footings
type of shallow foundation that incudes a wide thick area to distribute the weight of a wall n the bearing soil
Grillage footing
Footing consisting of layers of beams placed at right angles to each other and usually encased in concrete
Mat slab foundation
Thick slab beneath the entire area of a building a mat may be several feet thick and heavily reinforced
Floating foundations
the weight of the soil removed is equal to the weight of the building, the total weight supported at each soil layer beneath the building remains the same before and after excavation
Piles are
driven into the ground and support a loady by transferring the load either through friction with the surrounding soil or through contac with rock or stable soil layer
Peirs
are a system of upright posts mounted to wedge shaped concrete piers that transfer the weight of the structure to the ground
Materials most commonly used for foundation walls
Concrete and masonry block secured with mortar
Expanded polystyrene (EPS)
closed cell foam used for a growing number of purposes including building insulation properties include rigidity low weight and formability
Types of Settlement movement (3)
Settlement- downward movement
Heaving - Upward movement
Lateral displacement- Outward movement
Shoring refers to
temporary supports
