Chapter 5 - Skeletal Anatomy Flashcards
Name 2-3 Functions of the Skeletal System
- Support - Provides support by providing a framework that allows upright posture
- Movement - Allows movement by providing a rigid lever system for muscle attachment across joints.
- Protection - Protects vital organs and soft tissues
What do muscles attach to?
Tendons
What do tendons attach to?
Bones
The average human has how many bones?
206
How many bones are babies born with?
270
When landed on this card, label the skeleton
Are the spine and ribs part of the Axial Skeleton or the Appendicular skeleton?
Axial Skeleton
What are the four classifications of bones?
- Long Bones
- Short Bones
- Irregular bones
- Flat Bones
Name 3-4 bones that would be classified as Long Bones?
- Femur
- Humerus
- Ulna
- Radius
Name the bones that would be classified as Short Bones?
- Tarsals
- Carpals
Name 2-3 bones that would be classified as Falt Bones?
- Ribs
- Scapula
Name 2-3 bones that would be classified as Irregular Bones?
- Ischium
- Pubis
- Vertebrae
Draw and label, the diagram of all three planes of movement

Name and describe the three Important Synovial Joints
- Hinge Joint - Allows for movement in 1 direction or plane of motion
- Condyloid Joint - Allows for movement in 2 directions or planes of motion
- Ball and Socket Joint - Allows for movement in 3 directions or planes of motion
Define Medial and Lateral
Medial: Closer to the Midline
Lateral: Further away from the midline
Define Supine and Prone
Supine: Stomach is facing up
Prone: Stomach is facing down
Define Plantar and Dorsal Side
Plantar: The bottom base of the foot
Dorsal side: The top of the foot
Define Proximal and Distal
Proximal: The end of the bone or muscle that is closer to the midline
Distal: The end of the bone or muscle that is further from the midline
Define Flexion, Extension, and Hyperextension
- Flexion: The joint angle becomes smaller
- Extension: The joint angle becomes larger
- Hyperextension: Movement that occurs beyond the range of motion (ROM)
Name 3-4 bones of each Skeleton - Axial and Appendicular
Axial - Skull, Thorax, and Vertebrael Colum
Appendicular - Tibia, Fibula, Ulna, Radius, Femur, and Humerus
What three systems control the Spinal Stabilization system?
- Control Subsystem
- Passive Subsystem
- Active Subsystem
