Multiple card sort technique

A

Each barrier was listed on the index card, and a sample sentence was provided for context. In a controlled environment commanders were asked to read all the cards and place them in one of three boxes labeled minor challenge, moderate challenge, major challenge. A rule that all boxes must have equal distribution and could be resorted until they were done. 21 in each box.

Next applicants resorted the 21 major distractions equally again into major, moderate, minor with equal distribution. Seven each.

They were then asked the seven major distractions again equally into major, moderate, and minor.

Finally they were asked to rank the top three distractions in order first, second, and third.

After the multiple card slot technique was complete what did researchers do?

A

After the top three challenges to situational awareness were identified the fire ground commanders were interviewed about their experiences addressing each barrier separately.

The interviews were transcribed, then coded. Coding entailed reading each line of the transcript and finding instances where other barriers were mentioned. The number of times barrier was mentioned was equated with how challenging that barrier was to good decision-making.
