Q

Chapter 11: Attention Management p162

why is it the responders who try to listen to multiple conversations simultaneously are very likely to miss cues and clues or not comprehend the meaning of the messages?

A

the act of listening requires conscious thought as your brain processes the audible message into visual images. This simply is a limitation of the brain, it’s able to process and comprehend only one conversation at a time.

It’s possible for you to bounce back and forth between multiple conversations and derive the general idea of the conversation. But something is sure to be missed as you listen to one conversation and are momentarily ignoring the other.

Tunnel vision

A

Biological reaction triggered by hormones and chemicals causing your senses to narrowly focus on stimuli that are perceived as threatening. Under stress your attention can narrow down to one geographic area of the incident or one task being preformed. This can be caused by having an understaffed crew or task fixation. As well as other causes.
