Chapter 5 - Motivation, Emotion, Stress Flashcards
Arousal theory
People perform actions in order to maintain optimal level of arousal
Yerkes-Dodson law
Think green yellow and red light stress
*performance vs arousal
Maslow‘ should hierarchy
1) self actualisation
2) Esteem
3) Love / belonging
4) Safety
5) Physiological
Snow Assessments Ensure Love of Safety Perhaps
Opponent process theory
When the body counteracts effects of a drug by changing its physiology
**result in withdrawal symptoms that give the opposite response to the initial motivation (high)
Seven universal emotions
Happiness Sadness Contempt Surprise Fear Disgust Anger
James lang theory of emotion
Functionalist theory
Physiological arousal -> emotion
Ie: car cuts you off, HR goes up..sweating…so you think “i must be angry because my skin is hot”
Cannon-bard theory
Physiological arousal and feeling an emotion occur simultaneously
Schacter singer
Nervous system arousal and cognitive appraisal
Cognitive appraisal
Subjective evaluation of a situation that induces stress
Primary appraisal: initial evaluation of enviro and the associated threat
“What’s going on right now?!”
Secondary: can organism cope with the stress?
- harm or damage caused by an event
- threat (future damage can be caused)
- challenge (how can this be conquered?)
What is the general adaptation syndrom (three stages)
1) Alarm (sympathetic Nerv system)
-> hypothal-> ant pit> ACTH-> adrenal glands produce cortisol
Also hypothal activates adrenal medulla
-> epi and norepi secreted
-> activates sympathetic system
2) resistance
- continuous release of hormones allows symp system to stay activated to fight stressor
3) exhaustion: body can’t maintain the same level of response
- > bad stress, panic zone, burnout
Which emotions are associated with left and right side of frontal lobe
Left: positive feelings
- joy and happiness
Right : negative feelings
- sadness and disgust
