Anomie
Lack of social norms, breakdown of social bonds between an individual and society
Strain theory
How anomie conditions can lead to deviance
Upward and downward mobility
Movement of social mobility
Up: positive change in persons status
Down: negative
Horizontal mobility
Change in occupation or lifestyle that remains within the same social class
Ie: construction worker switches to be in custodial services or mechanical maintenance
Social reproduction
When social inequality, especially poverty is reproduced or passed on from one generation to the next
Absolute vs relative poverty
Absolute: people don’t have enough resources to maintain a quality of living (shelter food clothing water..etc)
Relative: one is poor compared to larger population
Incidence vs prevalence
Incident: new cases/ pop at risk / time
Prevalence: total case / total pop / time
