pessimistic view
people respond to differences by embracing feeling of us vs them
-feel belong to in-group and experience the out-group as completely different
-often leads to stereotypes, which are flawed because they ignore individual differences, but maintain a kernel of truth
-stereotypes are often linked to prejudice and ethnocentric bias: believing that the way one’s own culture does things is the right and normal way to do them
optimistic view
the multicultural society where a diversity of ethic/cultural groups live together, enriching each other’s cultures
-first generation migrant: being born in another country
-second generation migrant: parents are born in another country
-in a multicultural society, communication contexts (work, friends, online) are cultural diverse
