Chapter 5 - considerations for initial session Flashcards
Primary goal of first session
set the stage for coaching as an alliance to improve client’s well being
Goal for end of warm hand-off/first interaction…
a) clear understanding of who coach is
b) what will happen next
c) any responsibilities prior to first session
Rapport - blend of
effective verbal and nonverbal comm skills, active listening, no judgment, meeting client where they are
Six traps in the engaging process
1) assessment trap – spending time asking client questions; one directional
2) expert trap – righting reflex, portraying self as expert, no help in taking ownership
3) premature focus trap – emphasize client’s concerns, not those of the coach
4) labeling trap – coach “names” the problem that needs to be fixed
5) blaming trap – client may feel guilty or feel that the coach will blame him/her for the problem
6) chat trap – too much time on small talk, rather than the agenda
Focusing the conversation - direction paths (3)
CLEAR direction – SMART goals
CHOICES - agenda mapping, split tracking, reflective listening
UNCLEAR - OARS
