What is Cholelithiasis?
The presence of gallstones in the gallbladder.
What are Gallstones?
Solid, pebble-like deposits that form inside the gallbladder.
What causes the Gallstones to form?
It is not clear, but the presence of excess cholesterol in the bile makes gallstones more likely.
How many Americans are diagnosed with Cholelithiasis every year?
More than 1 million.
What percent of people with Gallstones do not have symptoms and do not require treatment?
About 80% of people.
When Gallstones cause pain or other complications how it must be treated?
By removing the entire Gallbladder with the stones.
Can a person live without the Gallbladder?
Yes, usually doesn’t cause serious complications.
What is Cholecystectomy?
The removal of the Gallbladder and is one of the most performed surgeries in the United States.
How is the surgery done of the Gallbladder?
An open incision in the skin and abdominal wall.
What is a Cholecystectomy Laparoscopic (referred to as a lap chole)?
Small instruments and video camera (laparoscopic) are inserted into the abdomen through several small puncture holes instead of the larger open incision.
What are the benefit of a Lap Chole?
Less pain and shorter recovery time.
