Chapter 4: Function of the Digestion System (continued) Flashcards
What are the six main function of the Digestive System?
Ingestion, secretion, excretion, movement, digestion and absorption.
What does the intake of food provides to the body (ingestion)?
Nutrients that the body uses to provide energy for all functions of the body.
What does the Digestive System Secretes?
Saliva, mucus, hydrochloric acid, enzymes and bile to aid in digestion and lubricate the GI tract. and protect the body from bacteria present in food.
What is Peristalsis (movement)?
The wave-like motion that moves the digested food down the GI tract.
What is Mechanical Digestion?
The physical breakdown of pieces of food into smaller pieces.
What is Chemical Digestion?
The break down of complex food molecules into smaller molecules that are easier to absorb by the action of acid, enzymes and pancreas juice.
Where does most absorption of nutrients occur?
In the Small Intestine.
How does the Small Intestine absorbs the nutrients?
Blood and lymphatic vessels in the intestinal wall pick up the molecules and carry them to the rest of the body.
What means defection?
The removal of indigestible substances and other waste products from the body.
