- a state of apprehension and worry in response to a vague sense of being threatened in some way

- a state of immediate alarm in response to a serious, known threat to ones well being

- Most common mental disorder in the US
- in any given year 18% of population will meet criteria
- 29% will have it

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A
- experience excessive anxiety under most circumstances and worry about practically anything
- “free-floating anxiety”

Sociocultural Perspective (GAD)
A
-most likely to develop in people who are faced with ongoing societal conditions that are dangerous (poverty)

Psychodynamic Perspective (GAD)
A
- defense mechanisms are particularly inadequate
- realistic anxiety: when they experienced fear
- neurotic anxiety: when they face psychological fear
- moral anxiety: superego claims you did something wrong and are punished for expressing id impulses
