Barrier to active bystanding

A
  • negative experience = intervene in similar situation and got negative response
  • support = may not have support to intervene
  • risk = of increasing harm
  • gender, cultural, and social roles = norms that make it hard to intervene
  • emotional state = personally triggering
  • peer pressure = hard to challenge that norm of peers
  • self confidence = affect ability to react

Ambivalence to active bystanding (can prevent)

A
  • social influence (look to other’s behaviors, 92% won’t act because think others will do it)
  • evaluation apprehension (fear of negative judgement)
  • diffusion of responsibility (think someone else will address the situation)
  • pluralistic ignorance (want to intervene, but think you’re the only one who thinks it is wrong)
