What is a bystander
A
- bystander = observer of situation/potential
- active bystander = intervenes, doesn’t risk own life or escalate
- passive bystander = doesn’t intervene
2

A
- negative experience = intervene in similar situation and got negative response
- support = may not have support to intervene
- risk = of increasing harm
- gender, cultural, and social roles = norms that make it hard to intervene
- emotional state = personally triggering
- peer pressure = hard to challenge that norm of peers
- self confidence = affect ability to react
3
Q
Ambivalence to active bystanding (can prevent)
A
- social influence (look to other’s behaviors, 92% won’t act because think others will do it)
- evaluation apprehension (fear of negative judgement)
- diffusion of responsibility (think someone else will address the situation)
- pluralistic ignorance (want to intervene, but think you’re the only one who thinks it is wrong)
4

A
- recognize the problem
- interpret the problem (need for intervention?)

- decide how to assist
- take action
5
