Chapter 5 Flashcards
Operations Strategy
efines how to execute its business strategy. It is how a firm’s processes are designedto produce the type of goods and servicesto support the firm’s business strategy

Quality function deployment
(QFD) is both a philosophy and a set of planning and communication tools that focus on customer needs in coordinating the design, manufacturing, and delivery of goods & services.
(QFD) stands for
Quality function deployment
House of Quality
is a graphic tool for designing and incorporating customer desires into a product. It is a part of QFD and it uses a planning matrix to relate customer needs to how a firm can meet those needs.
house of Quality is a part of ____
QFD (Quality function deployment)
QFD translates what?
[Test question]
translates customer wants into technical requirements of a product/service.
Building the House of Quality•
[ doubt u need to know but just read over it ]
Determine customer requirements through the voice of the customer (VOC).
•Define technical requirements of the product.
•Determine interrelationships between the technical requirements.
•The relationship matrix defines what technical requirements satisfy VOC needs
.•Customer priorities and competitive evaluation help select which VOC requirements the product should focus on.
Genichi Taguchi
stated that instead of constantly directing effort toward controlling a process to assure consistent quality, design the manufactured good to achieve high quality despite the variations that will occur in the production line.
Taguchi’s loss function
explains the economic value of reducing variation in manufacturing.
What type of function is a Taguichi’s loss function
Quadratic function
Taguichi’s loss function formula
L(x) = k (x – T )^2
L(x) is the
monetary value of the loss associated with deviating from the target,
X is the
actual value of the dimension
K
is a constant that translates the deviation into dollars
Make sure to look over the slides and practice the math for the Taguichi’s loss function
Slide 7, 8, 9
Reliability
is the probability that a manufactured good, piece of equipment, or system performs its intended function for a stated period of time under specified operating conditions. It is defined as a probability (0 R 1).
A 97% reliable part
97% reliable part has a probability of 0.97 that it will perform its function for a given period of time under specified operating conditions.
The total reliability of a serial system
serial system is the product of the individual probabilities of each process in a system
Make sure you go over thew examples for reliability
Slides 9, 10
Design failure-mode-and-effects analysis (DFMEA)
is a technique for identifying how a product may fail; the effect of a failure on the customer; seriousness, likelihood of occurrence, and ability to detect a potential failure; cause of failure, and how it can be corrected by improving the design.
Design for manufacturability (DFM)
is the process of designing a product for efficient production at the highest level of quality.
Product simplification
is the process of trying to simplify designs to reduce complexity and costs and thus improve productivity, quality, flexibility, and customer satisfaction.
Design for Sustainability:
Many products are discarded simply because the cost of maintenance or repair is too high when compared with the cost of a new item. One aspect of designing for sustainability is designing products that can easily be repaired and refurbished or otherwise salvaged for reuse.
The service scape
is all the physical evidence a customer might use to form an impression. It provides the behavioral setting where service encounters take place.
Standardization of the service scape
[ answer choice dont need to learn just read over]
enhances efficiency, especially for multiple site firms.
