Factors predisposing a person to stress
The nature of the stressor (importance, duration, cumulative effect, how dangerous)
Perception of the stressor
Individuals ability to withstand stress with out becoming impaired
Lack of external resources and support
Drugs used to treat depression
SSRI- affect reuptake serotonin
Antidepressants-target neurotransmitters
Tricyclic antidepressants TCA- inhibit reuptake serotonin and norepinephrine
MAOIs
How does a person respond to stress
Biologically (health)
Psychologically-learned coping (maladaptive, projection, denial, displacement)
Sociocultural (support or not)
What are the effects of severe stress?
Nervous system (blood sugar, heart rate, negative impact on nerves)
Immune system
Long term leads to diabetes, cancer, major diseases
Adjustment disorder
Unable to adjust to common life stressor.
Maladaption that occurs within 3 months of the stressor
Acute stress disorder
Occurs within 1 month of traumatic event. Experienced physical or emotional trauma, witnessed something horrible, confronted by someone with traumatic disturbances.
Symptoms: emotional detachment, social avoidance, derealization, depersonalisation, reduced awareness, anxiety, distress
Treatment: CBT, hypnotherapy, EMDR
Post traumatic stress disorder
Extreme traumatic event with effects that never subside (military, rape, abuse)
Symptoms: flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, easily startled
Treatment: TFCBT or EMDR paired with pharmacotherapy
