What is a Printing Press?
A machine for printing text or pictures from type or plates.
What is a compass?
A piece of equipment in a circular shape that is used for telling which direction you’re facing using the magnetic force of the Earth’s core.
What is a Caravel?
A small, fast Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15th–17th centuries.
What is an Astrolabe?
Similar to a compass, an astrolabe is a piece of equipment that uses the stars to tell direction.
What is a Cross-staff?
A piece of equipment similar in shape to that of a cross; though the line that makes it into a t shape is slidable, and used for measuring the stars for longitude and latitude.
What is a Back-staff?
A piece of equipment used to measure the height of the sun in the sky.
Who supported and financed the voyages of Christopher Columbus and why?
Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand funded these voyages so they could get more spices and wealth.
Why were Spices so expensive?
They passed through many hands and traveled great distances to get to the Europeans.
Why was Mali so wealthy?
It’s geography was set right before trading routes where slaves, salt, and gold were traded.

Who was Prester John and what did Prince Henry want with him?
A Christian ‘prince’ that allegedly ruled a very wealthy kingdom that lay beyond Muslim lands. Henry hoped John would help Portuguese explorers convert people from Africa to Christianity so that they could run a crusade to drive the Muslims out.
